Dog-lovers are a unique bunch of people. Once you fall in love and work with animals, it's difficult to do anything else. Such was the case for "Wags!" owner, Heidi Uresti-Sanchez. With a love for all animals since she was a child, from saving crickets, grasshoppers and frogs, to growing up around dogs, cats, and her PawPaw's horses, cows and pigs, she grew up and fulfilled her passion by working for a local Veterinary Hospital. While working there, she began noticing that some dogs simply stressed under boarding conditions, even though they were being excellently cared for. At the request of one client to make house calls while they were out of town, hoping it would improve their furbabies stress level when they were gone, she noticed an immediate difference in the pet. It was clear that there was a need for an alternative to standard kenneling for those more sensitive pets. She started a little business in 2004 called "Furry Friends and Critter Sitter" and began doing house calls or caring for animals in her home, along with still working at the Veterinary Hospital. When having her 1st and only child, she decided to stay home with him, and continue her small business in her free time. That quickly grew, and before she knew it, the demand for a full service dog hotel was imminent.
Thus, Wags! (Where Animals Get Spoiled!) was born in 2013! This became the first cage free, "hotel not a jail"- dog boarding facility in Victoria, Texas! She and her husband sold their home so that they could buy a piece of land and build a facility that would offer home type amenities for animals, all while living on site. This would allow the animals to be cared for in comfortable "themed dog rooms" throughout the day at night, 7 days a week. She refuses to charge extra for administering medication, or providing extra outside time. This comes along with the pricing. The attention doesn't stop at 5:00. She also believes that you should get 50% off if you have multiple furkids all staying in the same room.
If you are in need of a dog boarding facility offering something a little different, call Wags! and speak to Heidi or Mary Anne. They would be happy to answer your questions and set up a tour. Because Wags! cares for special needs animals that sometimes have special requirements, all tours and drop off/pick-ups are by prescheduled appointments only! Our doggy bedrooms are built just like your home, with sheetrock walls and tile flooring, and no short ceilings to make them feel confined. Our rooms offer full size metal doors with glass so they can see us at all times. Many rooms even have their own doggy doors to a private outdoor space. This feature is great for those who do not want to play in the community yard, or if they have arthritis and can’t go very far. With or without the dog door, they are all allowed the same amount of play and potty time outside. We DO NOT charge extra for additional outside play time. It is part of the package.
At night, each dog has a nightlight so they don't get scared, and we leave the overhead speakers on low so they are not in still silence. Future construction plans include adding a couple Large size rooms for the bigger families. Although we have a huge play yard, we also plan to add an indoor play room with central air and heat, equipped with a flat screen television. This will keep them busy during bad weather days when outside access is limited.
